Winamp:
Winamp is a very good audio player which supports almost all audio formats and also some video formats (some plugins might be necessary).When installing,I chose the classic version which is better than the new version which seems to use more memory. A html playlist of the songs can be obtained by right clicking on the misc tab and then from the Misc choice that pops up. The playlist can also be saved as .m3u format using the 'list opts' - 'save list' tab. While using winamp player pressing F3 key gets you the search window from winamp which is useful to search for a particular song if you know the name of the file. Right-clicking the name of the song in the search window gives you the option to enque the files and play the songs in some particular order that you like.The whole player can be minimised into a single line which is very useful for people who play music in the background while they work.The equalizer comes up in the default view and can be adjusted to one's taste. Some presets can also be accessed by left clicking on the presets tab. Website is www.winamp.com
Jetaudio:
Jetaudio is a audio player.It can also play some formats of video. The presets like pop, rock etc are available in the main window. (Note that old versions of jetaudio had some problem with cydoor advertising.) The file size is more than that of winamp and I think it uses more memory than winamp. Website is www.cowonamerica.com
BSplayer:
BSplayer plays back almost all video formats including most audio formats and comes with most common video and audio codecs. Website is www.bsplayer.com
Quintessential player:
Quintessential player is a free player which can be used to play both audio and video files. It is a very good player for avi files. There are lots of plugins to further enhance the player.New skins can be designed by anyone with basic grapic design knowledge. All the buttons can be changed to suit the users convenience. There is a reviewers guide(pdf) about the various features of the player which is available from the tour page of the quinnware website.This is very useful for users also. K-lite codec pack:
K-lite codec pack is a collection of different codecs and some useful players like media player classic( a good alternative to windows media player), real-alternative(for playing real media .rm format), quicktime-alternative(for playing .mov files), bsplayer and also some useful tools like G-spot (useful for finding info on the codec used in a particular video file).Website is www.k-litecodecpack.com
Virtualdub:
Virtualdub is a opensource video capture/processing tool and is suitable for batch processing of a large number of files especially avi files. The software can be extended by using third party video filters. website is www.virtualdub.org
